Sheds some disguise too, looks great...

Porsche has completed the first prototypes of the 918 Spyder and has got them pounding the racetracks doing development miles. We can see the body shape very clearly resembles the concept car, but rumour has it that this body will change significantly in design and that these prototypes are somewhat of a red herring.

Wearing camouflage reminiscent of the classic 917 racing cars, the prototypes focus “on the interplay between the highly sophisticated individual drive components.” As Porsche explains, the car’s plug-hybrid powertrain – which includes a 556 bhp 4.6-litre V8 engine, a 106 bhp electric motor on the front axle and a 120 bhp electric motor on the rear axle – represents a new set of engineering challenges for supercar development.

Despite the difficulties, Porsche has said the initial trials were “in line with the high expectations placed on the 918 Spyder.” As such, the prototypes have a combined output of around 780 bhp which enables them to accelerate from 0-62 mph in less than 3 seconds and hit a top speed in excess of 202 mph. Porsche is making big claims in terms of efficiency – drivers can apparently expect to average approximately 94.1 mpg with CO2 emissions of roughly 70 g/km. Now call us cynical, but any car with 780 bhp and a low slung Supercar body isn’t going to be driven slowly and where it will certainly be more efficient than a normal Supercar, we would bet a fair amount of money that it will never achieve 90+ mpg. But even if it manages 45 mpg it will still be 30 mpg more than the rivals.

As an added bonus (to some people), due to the 6.8 kWh lithium-ion battery the model can travel more than 15.5 miles on electricity alone at speeds up to 95 mph. One of the unique issues Porsche has come across is the routing of the exhaust pipes. When they tried having the exhausts coming out at the rear, the tubing passed far too close to the cooling systems for the engine, batteries and ECUs, so they now exit out of the top of the engine. With the ability to remove the roof panel this should make for quite an aurally stimulating drive.

The 918 Spyder will go into production in September 2013 and the first deliveries are set to take place later that year. The price is set to be over £500,000.

Final hurrah for the big V12 beast...

Okay, so right from the start we’ll happily admit that this article will be slightly biased – we love the Aston Martin DBS here at BOTB News. A big, brutish, dare we say manly British supercar GT. A glorious dinosaur in a world rapidly filling with electronically nannied Playstations on wheels like the McLaren MP4-12C and Ferrari 458 Italia.

They stick to the age old recipe of sticking a huge, naturally aspirated engine with masses of power in the front of a gorgeous coupe body, have it drive just the rear wheels and leave the rest to the conscience and ability of the driver. You can even have it with a manual gearbox if you want, or a nice proper slushmatic auto ‘box.

The DBS may be 5 years old now, but it’s still a stunning car. Using the familiar Aston design language seen on the V8 Vantage and DB9 but with an added 50% more aggression it sits on the road like it’s ready to devour anything in its path. It may not be as graceful as the DB9 but the DBS still stops traffic wherever it goes.

Under that bulging and vented bonnet sits the familiar 5.9 litre V12 with 510 bhp and 420 lb/ft of torque, enough for a 0-62mph sprint in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 191 mph (unless Aston say any different later this week, but we doubt it).

But the DBS is on its way out, ready to be replaced by an all-new car later this year. But it’s not going out without a fight and that’s where this DBS Ultimate comes in. There are no mechanical mods, but it makes the DBS look the best it has done its whole life.

Available as a Coupe or Volante, with manual or automatic gearbox and in a choice of three colours – Carbon Black, Quantum Silver or Silver Fox (almost white), the Ultimate gets all the extras both inside and out. There’s a dark grille up front, with the side mirrors, rear diffuser, front splitter and rear light strip all in satin or gloss carbon fibre. The rear also gets black exhaust tips and a new number plate surround. Inside there are diamond quilted seats and door panels with red stitching and on the Touchtronic gearbox you get red leather trimmed gearshift paddles.

Overall we think the DBS Ultimate – especially the near-white one in the above images – looks absolutely fantastic and would have one in a heartbeat. Now, where’s that £190,000…

Some tyre-shredding to prove the doubters wrong...

Fledgling Croatian supercar company Rimac debuted their Concept_One at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show and announced they would be building only 88 examples. At the recent Top Marques auto show in Monaco, Rimac announced the electric powered supercar would cost £600,000. Quite a high price tag for an electric vehicle, but the specs promise to live up to the hype.

The Concept_One features four electric motors that develop a huge combined power output of 1064 bhp and an earth-stopping 2802 lb/ft of torque. This should be enough for some serious performance and the Concept_One doesn’t disappoint again, with the 0-62 mph sprint taking just 2.8 seconds on the way to the 190 mph top speed. This is no doubt helped by the relatively low vehicle weight for an EV of 1650 kg.

It is generally EV lore that you can only choose two of the three variables – performance, weight and range. If you want high performance and low weight, you’ll have a small range (see Tesla Roadster). Or you can have a lightweight car that has massive range, yet is very slow. Basically this is because batteries weigh a lot, so for more range you’ll need more batteries, especially if they’re going to be drained quicker by higher performance. So it is very surprising when we learn that Rimac quote the range of the Concept_One as over 350 miles on a single charge.

Quite how they achieve the golden ticket of performance, weight and range is beyond us but at least they’ve now shown us that the concept is more than just a 3D CAD rendering. There were a lot of people doubting that the Concept_One even existed, so Rimac answered this with a short video showing the car doing some drifting and burnouts:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaJUZIdDiFw

It also gives us a chance to see the styling in daylight and we have to say it’s a very good looking car. It rides a little high for our tastes, but that is down to the huge HRE wheels. Knock them down an inch or two and it would be a very well resolved design without calling on too many current designs for inspiration. It certainly has the low, wide stance of a supercar, with exposed carbon running down the sides, across the rear and adorning the front grille and bumper. The rear has a slight hint of Koenigsegg CCX-R and Fisker Karma, but that’s a stretch to define them.

The interior gets a simple dash layout with a large touchscreen to control most of the car’s systems and more than a few cows died to cover every surface in finest leather. The whole car certainly looks good enough to justify the price tag.

We’ll be following the Concept_One through to production and eagerly wait to see if the specs can be matched in the real world.

Most people would think that a Ferrari 458 Spider is pretty much perfect as it is. You specify your £200,000+ car at the Ferrari dealer and add all your little carbon fibre bits and carefully select your colours for the outside and interior.

But despite the huge level of customisation available, some people still want to take delivery of their Supercar and take it straight to a tuning company to further personalise* their vehicle. Novitec Rosso are one of the most respected Ferrari tuning companies in the world, known for their subtle styling tweaks, so at least we’re onto a good start.

For the 458 Spider Novitec Rosso have gone for some subtle carbon fibre styling additions and a little engine tweakery too. The front end gets a slit chin spoiler in carbon, while there are two small winglets that join up to the air deflecting ‘vent spoilers’ in the bumper cutouts. The sides get wider carbon fibre sills and there are carbon vents that fill in the small gaps in the front wings.

At the back there’s the option of a small carbon lip spoiler, or a larger carbon item (we’d choose the lip) and there is a larger rear diffuser. There are optional black rear lights too, but we’d leave these off as they make it look a little too tuned for us. As you can see in the images there are also two options for wheels – both in 21” front, 22” rear sizes. We’d go for the silver items in the first image – looks much more OEM and less ‘look at me’. The other option has black wheel centres with a colour matched lip, a little too much for us.

There are also changes made to the suspension, including dropping the car 35mm and offering a nose lift system – which is offered by Ferrari too.

The engine manages to gain an extra 40 bhp from a special carbon-fibre air box with modified air routing and a high-performance exhaust system. This gives a power output of 602 bhp and helps with weight reduction as well as it comes in at 21 kg less than the standard item.

Overall this is certainly one of the better executed tuned Supercars we’ve seen, especially when compared to the recent offerings by companies such as Mansory. We approve.

*this normally means ruin

Bugatti, obviously hurting from not being in the news for a few days, have released the details of a special edition Grand Sport that they revealed to private customers at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. Imaginatively named the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Brown Carbon Fibre Edition, it features – can you guess? – yes that’s right, brown weave carbon fibre for the main body panels.

The bonnet, bumper, side skirts and rear clamshell are all presented in lacquered brown weave carbon fibre while the remaining panels are in polished aluminium. The wheels are painted a matching brown with diamond polished faces on the prominent spokes.

Inside, the BVGSBCFE (that’s easier) gets brown ‘Gaucho’ leather covering every surface including the centre console which is usually covered in turned aluminium.

Now normally we would take this opportunity to ridicule the poor choice of colours or options that Bugatti have chosen to wheel out for their latest attempt to hog the limelight. But this one, the BVGSBCFE, has us utterly hooked.

You see, we love brown cars here at TorquingPoint. A nice brown classic 6-Series BMW with a brown velour interior would be perfection for us. So to see this €1.79 million Veyron covered in brown Carbon and dripping with other bits in the colour we just want it, badly. We’d go as far as to say it’s the best looking Veyron we’ve seen so far, aside from maybe the all-blue-carbon Supersport.

Maybe we need to have a lie down, but first we have a strange desire for a chocolate bar…

Could we be looking at the end of shifting gears yourself?...

Not long ago you only had two options for changing gear in a car – manual or automatic. The former was for ‘normal’ cars and sports cars, the latter for barges and the like. But with technological developments the line has got very blurred and it seems to be bringing forth something that frightens the hell out of me as a petrolhead – the death of the manual gearbox.

We’re already at the stage where you can no longer buy a manual Ferrari – imagine telling that to sometifosi 30 years ago and they’d spit their espresso in your face. The replacement for the Lamborghini Gallardo will undoubtedly be offered without a shiny stick sprouting from the centre console and Aston Martin will most likely ditch the option of human shifting on the next gen of cars. The only real saving grace out there for those of us who prefer to shift gears ourselves is Porsche.

But why are companies getting rid of the manual gearbox? Surely it’s part of sports car lore? Well in the end, it very sadly all boils down to saving some polar bears. Yep, that’s right – the eco mentalists are in charge of our sports car gear shifting. All car companies, including those that make our favourite super cars are being forced to lower their CO2 emissions and in order to get a 700bhp Aventador to sneak through the emissions ratings at under 400g/km Lamborghini, like all the others, fettle the gearbox and engine parameters so that at the specific rev and speed range used to determine the emissions, the 6.5 litre behemoth’s powerplant is operating at the absolute optimum settings. This is very hard to do with a manual gearbox as you can’t control it nearly as much.

The other reason is a technical one – in the Ferrari 458 all the systems; engine, suspension, gearbox, exhaust etc are all linked together by the multiple ECUs. This means you can set the car to Race and the suspension firms up, the gearshifts are lightning quick, the exhaust valves stay open and everything works as one. If you shifted gears manually this would be very hard to integrate. But do we really need all of this?

Porsche seem to be the only sports car maker willing to stick with the manual gearbox, developing a 7-spd manual box for the new 911. The next GT3 is set to offer a PDK option though which will enrage the purists. Not me though, I have no problem with companies offering the dual-clutch gearboxes and the like, just give us the option of shifting gears ourselves if we want to. Sadly it seems unlikely that the next generation of 911 will have a manual gearbox at all as Porsche are forced to lower their emissions even further.

As an example of my point, a while ago I drove my favourite section of blacktop back-to-back in a Ferrari 458 and a Porsche 997 GT3 RS. I went a good 15-20mph faster in the 458 and it was amazing, exhilarating even but I got to the end and pondered “How much of that was actually me?”

In the RS I got out at the end and my pulse was racing, I was sweating and the adrenaline was pumping through me. What I knew though, was that it was all me. Every perfectly timed downshift blipping the throttle, even every fluffed shift, gave me a thrill, a sense of achievement.

As an engineer, I am incredibly impressed by the dual clutch boxes, and indeed if I were to have a car as a daily driver it would be some kind of auto. But when I want to drive, really get the most driving pleasure I can out of a few miles in a sports car, I want to control it myself.

I love the tactile feeling of snicking that lever from gear to gear, timing the changes, heel and toeing to perfectly get that downshift on the way into a corner. Does it make me a Luddite? Absolutely not – I welcome these dual clutch ‘boxes for the technical marvel that they are and I think they have a place. But for me, in my sports car, I’ll take a manual shifter please. As a chap on Pistonheads so aptly put it recently…

“Paddles are for canoes”

Of course, the manual gearbox will be a common sight on ‘normal’ cars for some time yet. Manual gearboxes are simply much cheaper to produce at the moment. But all it takes is a push from some manufacturers to go auto across the range and the volumes will start to increase. When that happens they price of these dual-clutch and auto ‘boxes will drop and you can expect to see them in everything from a base Fiesta to a £1m hypercar as standard.

What this could also mean, is that manual sports cars could become a rarity in the seconds hand market. Buying a Ferrari 575M with a manual gearbox now could see it rise in value purely because so few manuals were sold, while holding onto a manual shifting Porsche 911 GT3 is a pretty safe bet too.

We just hope that there will always be smaller manufacturers too, like Noble who don’t even offer a non-manual version of their 650 bhp M600. We can always rely on them to satisfy our need to shift gears ourselves.

You may have seen last week’s blog piece with news of David Coulthard joining the Best of the Best
team. We spent a day with David recently to create some official company videos and photography
and at the same time we took the opportunity to film a couple of interviews.

First up, DC had a chat with past Supercar winner Alun Rowe to find out what it’s like to take the
winner’s phone call…and then choose the car!

Best of the Best Managing Director and Founder, William Hindmarch, then sat down with DC to talk
through the story so far…and discuss the company’s future plans.

Stay tuned for more from DC over the coming months. And don’t forget, you could win the stunning
Mercedes SLS David and Will are sitting on in this month’s Supercar Competition

For more behind the scenes images from the day and the chance to win £100 worth of Supercar
competition tickets in the Photo Caption Competition head over to our Facebook page.

And if you missed the earlier blog piece, we’ve republished it below:

F1 Legend Signs up with Best of the Best

We’re delighted to welcome David Coulthard – 13-time Formula 1 Grand Prix winner – to the Best of the Best team as our new Brand Ambassador!

David has had an active interest in Best of the Best since first seeing our stands in Heathrow airport as he travelled the globe in his F1 racing days. As with many people, the idea of a Supercar competition greatly appealed to him…and a few years later we now welcome him on board to help grow the company further.

We spent the day with David earlier this month to discuss our car line-ups and future plans, as well as create some promotional videos and photography to be featured on the BotB website, at our airport and shopping centre stands and in our marketing campaigns over the coming months.

We met at a 200 year-old country manor in the Essex countryside set in over 10 hectares of beautiful parkland and gardens. The location formed the perfect backdrop to our line-up of Supercars…and the man himself.

Alongside a stunning Mercedes SLS, other Supercars there on the day included an Audi R8 V10 Spyder, Bentley Continental, Porsche 911, Nissan GTR, Aston Martin V8, Ariel Atom, Lotus Evora and the very latest Range Rover Vogue – every petrolhead’s dream! Each car was polished and shined to within an inch of its life and lined up in a variety of formations…

Thankfully, the heavy rain experienced early in the morning had passed by the time DC arrived on set, so after a quick change, he was whisked into position and the cameras started rolling…

In a blur of filming and takes, DC recorded a number of videos, including an introductory piece on Best of the Best, another explaining the Supercar competition, plus interviews with both William Hindmarch (BotB Founder and MD) and Alun Rowe (a recent Supercar winner).

Interspersed amongst the filming, DC posed for a variety of stills shots – as you’d expect from someone used to appearing in front of a camera, the man was a model pro…and we’re pleased to say, equally charming off-camera!

DC will be the ‘face’ of Best of the Best from April onwards and we look forward to bringing you even more from him in the coming weeks and months.

Can the hardcore XK live up to the looks?...

I had a strange feeling of déjà vu. Looking out of the window at a grey sky filled with drizzle and a day driving a 500+bhp coupe ahead of me, I got those familiar little butterflies in my stomach that shouted to me “push it that bit too far and you’ll be in a hedge, boy” that I got before driving the Mercedes SLS.

Still, a day driving a supercar in drizzle is still better than a day not driving one at all so off I went to my pickup point at écurie25’s clubhouse in Wakefield, where as I pulled up I saw my ride for the day – the 542bhp Jaguar XKR-S. I’m man enough to admit that as I rounded the corner and saw it sitting there in jet black with black wheels, all spoilers and aggressiveness, I clenched. It’s a mean looking car, make no mistake.

So, the usual handover process was done and I was clear to take in the Jag and get to know it before setting off. To call the XKR-S aggressive is like saying that Charles Bronson had ‘a bit of a temper’. At the front, there’s a low bumper with a jutting carbon fibre splitter sitting below the grille which houses the famous Jaguar’s head and a new R-S badge. At the sides, just ahead of the front wheels are new aerodynamic vertical ‘vanes’ to help direct airflow – I’m not sure if they actually do that, but they look fantastic. At the rear there’s a diffuser housing the four exhaust pipes and a large wing sits atop the bootlid with the centre section in carbon. The only splashes of colour on this XKR-S are the red brake callipers behind the gorgeous 20-inch black alloy wheels.

The body addenda on this Jag have been likened by many to a ram-raid through Halfords, but they do have a purpose – the XK shape was never designed for going as fast as the R-S can travel, so the extra aero aids are needed to keep it on the ground instead of flying off into it when it hits the new 186mph top speed.

For what it’s worth, I really like the look – it’s almost cartoonishly aggressive. The interior is another thing altogether – traditional Jag fare with the rising gear selector and clear layout, but add in the deep sports seats, black leather with red stitching and a B&W stereo and this Jag looks every bit the racer, even if it’s a racer wearing a nicely tailored suit. No alcantara or roll bars here.

This is slightly strange, because Jaguar originally touted this XKR-S as a rival to the Porsche 911 GT3, the most racerish of all the hardcore coupés. But the biggest changes are apparently in the way it drives and I’ve already wasted too much time without the engine running.

As you sit in the R-S, key fob in pocket and see the Start button pulsing away you know you’re in for a treat. So foot on the brake, button depressed and to be honest, I wondered if for a minute Thor, the God of Thunder had appeared behind the car. The engine erupts into life with a feral bark from the exhausts, settling into a filthy burble that wouldn’t be out of place coming from the rear of a 60’s Dodge Charger. After letting it warm up a little the child in me takes over and I give the throttle a few blips, which unfortunately may have led to an entire old people’s home perishing 3 roads away due to the noise. It emits such a rude, loud, mechanical growl that there’s a very good chance you could go through an entire tank of fuel just on your driveway (see video below for proof).

www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWI53bYs7LE

I only had a day with this Jag, so it was all systems go from the off. After a while to get used to the balance of the car I was straight into Sport on the gearbox, Dynamic mode enabled, and the DSC set to ‘Track’. The difference was instant – the throttle became much sharper, the suspension tauter and the valves opened in the exhaust all the time. This was going to be fun.

Especially as I had found a road in the Peak District that was not only dry, but had rose hundreds of feet with combinations of slow tight corners and long sweeping bends. Best of all it was almost completely deserted, allowing me to indulge in my own little mini-Nürburgring fantasy. But don’t let the fact that this is a comfortable Jaguar on the motorway lull you into a false sense of security – the XKR-S is an animal. It’s very much like the Aston Martin DBS in that it is a very physical car to drive and you have to be on your toes. There is a lot of power going to the rear tyres and they will break traction very easily.

Brake late into a corner using the massive stoppers and use the very direct steering to point you where you want to go, let the car settle and squeeze the throttle hard and the back end with break away with a satisfying blare from the exhausts, an arm full of lock and then the DSC will reign things in and enable you to simply wind off the lock and catapult up the road to the next corner. Traction is broken easily but it really is surprisingly docile when at the limits.

On the straights it will squirm even when in 3rd on a damp road, but when the rear tyres grip the acceleration is incredible – a furious wall of sound from the exhausts, like a Spitfire is directly above you and you’re pushed into the seat until you flick the paddle and grab another gear. This brings me to the downside of this XKR-S – the gearbox. Being a traditional auto ‘box, even in Dynamic mode the shifts just aren’t quick enough for a car like this. On the road you learn to work around it which you shouldn’t really have to do, but I’d imagine on track it would become frustrating. You can shift up on full throttle but there’s a worrying ‘thump’ when you do and there’s still a lag.

What I don’t know is where to position the R-S. On the road it’s seriously impressive, but still not as hardcore or as involving as the 911 GT3 so it must then be a fast GT car. But they have the standard XK for that. It’s also mighty pricey at £97,000. The way it saves itself and distances from the GT3 is that when you switch all the systems back to normal, auto ‘box shifting for you, you could be in any Jag as the ride is great and it’s refined and quiet on the move. The GT3 can’t do that; it’s a one-trick pony. The XKR-S is a car you could have as your daily driver and it would fit into your life perfectly with its huge boot and lovely stereo. But on those days when you’re feeling a bit naughty, it’ll be there for you ready to wake up everything in a 10 mile radius with the glorious sound of a shouting supercharged V8 being thrashed through the hills.

We’re delighted to welcome David Coulthard - 13-time Formula 1 Grand Prix winner – to the Best of the Best team as our new Brand Ambassador!
