Most powerful convertible on sale...

Ford has today unveiled the 2013 Shelby GT500 Convertible to the world’s media at the Chicago Auto Show.

It marks as the celebratory vehicle for the 20th anniversary of Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT). They were officially launched at the same show back in 1992 which Ford unveiled the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra and SVT F-150 Lightning.

The new GT500 Convertible is powered by the same unit found in its coupe sibling (that we reported on back inNovember) – a 5.8-litre supercharged V8 engine. It generates a mammoth 650 bhp and 600 lb/ft of torque enabling the open-top model to lap Sebring International Raceway 3.5 seconds quicker than the previous generation model. However, SVT have taken an unusual step by introducing a speed limiter which gives the convertible a top speed of 155mph (250kph). This is likely because the roof arrangement can’t cope above those speeds, as it would require considerable strengthening.

“The Shelby GT500 convertible is every bit the performer that the coupe is,” said Kerry Baldori, SVT Global Performance Vehicles chief engineer. “All of the significant changes we made in the program were instrumental in delivering a convertible that could really shine on the track but can still be driven on a daily basis.”

Like the Coupe, a Performance Package and a Track Package will also be available for the Convertible. The Performance Package includes Bilstein electronically-adjusted dampers while the Track Package features an external engine-oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler to prevent over-heating on the track.

The GT500 Convertible is also the more powerful converible currently on sale.

Production of the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will begin at the AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan this summer. Ford has yet to comment on whether the GT500 Coupe and Convertible will be coming to Europe or the UK, but they will certainly be available through specialist importers.

Stunning supercar to go under the hammer next week in Arizona...

An incredibly rare Jaguar XJ220S is set to go to auction in Arizona next week.

The regular Jaguar XJ220 was limited to a production run of just 350 units, but this model is the super-rare XJ220S which had a production run of just 6 units. The XJ220S was built with the help of Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) who stripped most of the original XJ220′s aluminium body and replaced it with superlight carbon fibre. The ‘S’ also got a new front bumper with fared-in driving lights and large splitter, along with a much larger adjustable rear wing with the struts elegantly smoothed into the rear wings.

What this new bodywork and other lightening measures achieved was incredible – the XJ220S weighed a staggering 400 kg less than the standard car at 1080 kg. The XJ220S came with the standard XJ220’s twin turbo 3.5 litre V6 power unit but was tweaked by TWR to produce 680 bhp and 526 lb/ft of torque.

However this particular car has a new $20,000 titanium exhaust system by TWR and additional engine updates which has raised it to approximately 700 bhp. That’s a power to weight ratio of 605 bhp/tonne, very impressive numbers.

Visually the owner decided that this car; chassis #784, needed a little more mystique and aggression (really? Had he actually seen the car beforehand?!), so had it repainted in an exact match for the satin matte grey finish of the Lamborghini Reventon. There are new projector headlights and the magnesium wheels were refurbished and fitted with modern tyres, while the interior has had a full re-trim. What he created was possibly one of the best looking supercars of all time – such smooth lines and aggression combined in one package.

This exceptional XJ220S is expected to fetch between £150,000 and £200,000 when it goes under the hammer next week, which seems a little low to us. A standard XJ220 sells for around £160,000 in the current market so we’d expect this amazing and rare ‘S’ to sell for well over £200,000.

SRT8 Grand Cherokee gets a serious power upgrade...

Hennessey Performance sent out their Xmas press release today which started, “Who Needs Reindeer When You Have an 800 HP Twin Turbo Sleigh?”

With that in mind, Hennessey has released this sole image of their 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 packing a HPE800 Twin Turbo engine package. It consists of the factory 6.4-litre HEMI V8 with an increased displacement to 7.0-litres in addition to a rather sizeable twin turbo system.

In standard specification the Grand Cherokee SRT8 outputs 465 bhp and 465 lb/ft of torque which is good for a 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds. However, Hennessey’s HPE800 equipped Grand Cherokee SRT8 produces a staggering 805 bhp and 823 lb/ft of torque. The HPE800 strangles the 0-60 mph sprint in 3.1 seconds and can destroy the 1/4 mile in 10.9 seconds @ 130 mph.

Additional modifications include an upgraded transmission system and torque converter upgrade, 15.1 inch Brembo brakes front and rear, a lowered sport suspension system, lighter 20” alloy wheels, a carbon fibre front splitter and a custom leather interior with Alcantara steering wheel.

“We’ve built a dozens of 600-800 bhp Jeep SRT8s over the past five years, so we have an existing client base who will want to upgrade the new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 to an even higher level”, said company founder and president, John Hennessey. “This vehicle is designed for the performance minded driver who lives in Aspen or Moscow and wants to be the fastest in all weather conditions.”

HPE will only build 24 vehicles with pricing starting at $235,000 which is quite a substantial price increase over the standard car’s $55,000 price tag. But then you do get performance to shame most sports cars…

1000bhp/tonne and no roof. Insanity at its best...

Hennessey Performance have released the first image and details for the Venom GT Spyder, the open top variant of their Venom GT supercar.

The GT Spyder features a twin-turbo V8 with 1,200 bhp and a scarcely believable 1,135 lb/ft of torque. It enables the 1200 kg supercar to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.4 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 272 mph.

The Venom GT and GT Spyder are based on the Lotus Exige as the styling would suggest, but with almost every component changed. What Hennessey end up with is one of the most dramatic looking supercars ever.

“With the hardtop in place, the Venom GT offers a very visceral, raw, driving experience”, comments Hennessey CEO, Don Goldman. “With the hardtop removed, the wind and the growl of the twin turbo V8 will offer our clients an even greater driving sensation.”

It will certainly do that. We can’t be sure that the top speed is still 272 mph with the roof off, but it will definitely be a visceral experience finding out. Most will think that the Venom GT Spyder is all about brutal acceleration, but Hennessey Performance have managed to hone the handling as well, so that it won’t try to kill you at every turn. Make no mistake though; this will not be a supercar for the feint hearted. The Venom GT Coupe has been performance tested and come back with a staggering 0-200 mph time of 15.9 seconds. A Bugatti Veyron takes 24 seconds to do the same.

The Hennessey Venom GT deliveries will commence in the summer of 2012 with a total of only 5 Coupe or Spyder vehicles planned for production during the 2013 model year. Pricing for the coupe is set at $950,000 whereas the Spyder will cost $1.1 million.

But just to put all those performance stats in perspective, see below for a video of the Venom GT going from 70-215mph. Amazing stuff, particularly when you can hear it wheelspinning somewhere between 180 and 200 mph…

Whole range updated, but GT500 will now do 200mph...

Ford has today pulled the covers off the full 2013 Mustang range, including the range-topping Shelby GT500.

The whole range gets a new look to the front end with standard fitment HID lights, a more prominent grille inspired by the GT500 and a new front bumper. At the rear they all get new LED rear lights which look fantastic with a gloss black panel between them and a re-profiled rear bumper. There are more details to the standard Mustangs, but the big news is the GT500.

The 2012 GT500 had a pretty impressive 550 bhp, but Ford have really outdone themselves this year by giving the new 2013 model a mammoth 650 bhp from an enlarged 5.8 litre supercharged V8 along with 600 lb/ft of torque. Absolutely incredible stats for a production Ford with a standard warranty. The entire cooling system has been significantly updated on the new 5.8-litre engine. It now includes a larger cooling fan, fan shroud with high-speed pressure-relief doors, a more efficient charge air cooler, a higher-flow intercooler pump and an intercooler heat exchanger with volume increased 36%. There is a new front splitter and the rear bumper features a mock diffuser and quad slash-cut exhaust tips.

The GT500 weighs in at a not-inconsiderable 1746 kg, but with 650 bhp to deploy via the 20″ alloy wheels it can get from 0-62 mph in just over 4 seconds and tops out at a Supercar-level 200mph. The 2012 model came in at under $50,000 so if they can do the same with this model it will offer the best bhp-for-buck of any car available today, comfortably beating the Nissan GT-R.

Available as an option on the GT500 is the Performance Package, which includes SVT-designed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers that are accessed on the dash with a simple push of a button. Normal mode gives customers a more comfortable ride over road irregularities. Sport mode is all about performance, delivering improved response time on the track and less body roll while cornering and pitch under braking. A Torsen limited-slip differential also comes with the Performance Package.

“The adjustable shocks let us develop our car on the track without any compromise,” said Kerry Baldori, Ford SVT Global Performance Vehicles chief engineer. “Before, we had to tune the car with street implications in mind. Now we can go as extreme as we want on the track setting and still offer the customer a comfortable ride on the road.”

Enthusiasts can upgrade their Performance Package with an additional Track Package for all-out performance. The option comes with an external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler for further durability. The coolers play an essential role in preventing crucial components from overheating under high-speed conditions. Both packs also come with unique 19″ front and 20″ rear alloy wheels.

For the standard Mustang models there are the styling revisions detailed above, plus the 5.0 litre V8 GT model now gets 420 bhp as standard. The V6 model power stays the same. GT owners also get the option of a Track Pack which gives track enthusiasts an engine cooler, upgraded radiator, performance friction brake pads and a Torsen LSD. The package includes everything in the current Brembo Brake Package, with 14-inch vented front discs, unique 19-inch alloy wheels and summer performance tires.

We can’t wait to drive the new models and see how they perform and handle, but for now we’re still blown away by the concept of a series production Ford with only 11 bhp less than a Ferrari 599 GTO…

Lexus has today revealed the GS350 F-Sport. Until now the GS range has been rather staid and boring in its lineup, but Lexus has decided that there is a market out there for a sportier version to take on the BMW 5-Series M-Sport and the Mercedes E-Class Sport. Designed to “engage driving enthusiasts with factory engineering,” the model is distinguished by new styling modifications.

Up front we have a new bumper with lots of aggressive vents and slashes to aid cooling. The main grille gets chromed ‘pinches’ at the sides which again aid the aggressive look, and there is aluminium mesh in all the openings for a race look. At the rear there is a new bumper with a faux diffuser and twin exhaust outlets and a subtle boot spoiler.

On the handling front, the car is equipped with thicker anti-roll bars, larger front brakes, an Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system and exclusive 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the cabin features perforated leather seats, a black headliner and alloy pedals. There’s also a sport steering wheel and aluminum trim which all combines to give this GS one of the nicest interiors in the segment. In our eyes it is now the 2nd best looking interior behind the Jaguar XF, certainly better than the BMW 5er and Mercedes E.

The F-Sport package will be available on all engine variants, but in this case power comes from a 3.5-litre V6 engine with 306 hp (228 kW / 310 PS) and 277 lb-ft (375 Nm) of torque. It is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission which enables the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds. In terms of efficiency, owners can expect to average 20 mpg city / 27 mpg highway (RWD) or 18 mpg city / 25 mpg highway (AWD).

The GS with F-Sport package will feature two new colors: Riviera Red and Liquid Platinum, and also be available in Starfire Pearl, Nebula Gray Pearl and Obsidian. Vehicles in Riviera Red will benefit from glass flakes incorporated into the coating that adds a high level of brilliance to the paint.

Fisker weren't happy with the ratings given, so they responded by..... Facebook...

The Karma, a four-door, four-seat luxury sports sedan, comes to us courtesy of Fisker Automotive, which touts itself as an “American manufacturer of premium green automobiles.” The Karma is an extended-range plug-in hybrid, which means it runs solely on electric power but includes a gasoline engine as a generator. Fisker claims a stunning 100 mpg (or 2.35 liter per 100 km) mileage for the Karma.

The technology is called Q-DRIVE and was developed by Quantum Technologies exclusively for Fisker. It features two 210 hp electric motors on the rear axle powered by a lithium-ion battery. A 2.0 liter, turbo-charged 4-cylinder direct-injection Ecotec petrol engine with 260 hp acts as a generator to resupply power to the battery for extended-range capabilities. The Karma can run up to 50 miles (80 km) on electric power alone and can be recharged from any electrical outlet. With the petrol engine, the Karma’s range is upped to 300 miles (480 km). Among the impressive performance figures is a 0-62 mph time of around six seconds and a top speed of 125 mph.

However, the 2012 Fisker Karma sedan has now received emission certification and fuel economy ratings from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), allowing the company’s dealers to begin selling the car to customers immediately in most states, and Fisker aren’t happy.

The EPA found that, when running in electric mode, the Fisker Karma sedan achieves the energy equivalent of 52 miles per gallon city/highway combined. The Karma’s all-electric range was found to be 32 miles by the EPA under its test criteria. These figures are worse than Fisker’s original claim of 50 miles. To put that figure in perspective, a Karma driver with a 40-mile commute who starts each day with a full battery charge will only need to visit the gas station about every 1,000 miles and would use just 9 gallons of gasoline per month, according to Fisker.

Fisker’s own analysis suggests that many Karma drivers will actually experience a longer all electric range under most every day driving conditions. Research also reveals that more than half of American’s have a daily commute of less than 32 miles, a comfortable distance for the Karma to run in electric-only mode from a single charge. But today Fisker have responded via their Facebook page, stating that:

We recently received final certification from the EPA, including the fuel economy label. The two primary numbers, 52 MPGe in all-electric battery mode and 20 MPG in gasoline range-extending mode, are based on the EPA’s tests and reflect one viewpoint of energy efficiency in those two modes. However, we do not believe that the label communicates the entire story.

As Karma drivers, you can utilize our electric-only mode most of the time – especially in the city – thereby achieving a much higher MPG than suggested by the EPA fuel economy label and contributing zero emissions during day-to-day driving. We strongly believe that many Karma drivers will get up to 50 miles of all-electric driving range on a single charge, as reflected in our early field testing.

Traditional fuel economy numbers are structured for a conventional vehicle running on gasoline as a single fuel. With a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, driver choices and operating behavior can affect the overall fuel economy more so than any other type of vehicle. The EPA tests for vehicles in this category are a relatively new endeavor and in our view do not reflect the variability that is inherent with a plug-in hybrid vehicle – and therefore, present a conservative scenario.

In short, the fuel economy of your Karma Sedan will depend on how you use it.

If you drive 32 miles or less in a single day, as 61% of drivers in the United States do, you could conceivably use no gasoline at all. If you drive 40 miles or less in a given day, as nearly 68% of drivers in the United States do, your overall fuel economy (assuming a full charge each day) will be the equivalent of 100 MPG.

So who do we believe? The EPA or Fisker? We’ll wait until a car publication tests the Karma in real world driving before we make our decision.

For several years, DeLorean Motor Company of Texas has been creating ‘new’ DMC-12 models from old stock and remanufactured parts, feeding the huge worldwide following the car has. Now it’s working with electric-car startup Epic EV to put an all-electric DMC-12 into production by 2013.

Humble, Texas-based DeLorean Motor Company not only owns the DMC brand name, but it also maintains a huge stockpile of original, factory parts. The company’s primary business has been restoring, servicing and selling DeLorean cars and merch, but it’s also been using those parts to assemble new cars to order, using 80% original parts and 20% modern engine and suspension tech. These new models are, in effect, pro-touring versions of the original DeLorean cars. They handle, ride and more importantly go a lot better than the original This is mainly due to the original car coming with a Renault sourced V6 engine which put out a frankly embarassing 160bhp. The body was writing cheques the powerplant couldn’t cash. Now, the instant surge of power and effortless torque offered by an electric powertrain may just give the DMC-12 the performanc it always deserved.

The new car the two companies unveiled yesterday at the International DeLorean Owners Event in Houston, Texas is no run-of-the-mill electric DeLorean conversion. It’s a development model of a car, called the DMC-EV, which DeLorean plans to launch into production in two years.

The companies haven’t released any specs yet, but if it’s anything like Epic EV’s Torq Roadster, it’ll get a 200 hp+, 44V/156V electric motor, powered by a 24-30 KWh lithium ion phosphate battery. Sure, it’s bit low on Gigawatts right now, but the companies have two years to get that sorted out. Performance is going to be in the region of 4.9 seconds for the 0-60mph dash, but will top out at c.120mph. Hey, at least it’ll be able to get to 88mph.

What isn’t sure as yet is range. The powertrain will be geared towards performance instead of economy, but with current battery technology this means a range of 100 miles. Within 2 years though, battery tech will have improved and DMC expect a range of 200 miles, with a 2hr full charge capability. If this is the case, we think these will sell like hoverboards.

And unlike the regular DeLorean, if you run out of charge you probably could actually recharge it by strapping a lightning rod to its rear and sticking it out in a lighning storm…

Most powerful Camaros ever, putting the muscle back in Muscle Cars...

Chevrolet has announced the Camaro ZL1 Coupe and Convertible

Set to be launched late next year, the new high performance models have an aggressive body kit with a new front fascia, a ventilated hood and a revised grille. At the rear there is a low level spoiler and quad exhaust tips to distinguish this from the lesser models. It may not be a pretty car by any means, but as a modern muscle car, it certainly strikes the right balance. Newly designed 20″ alloy wheels wear specially design Goodyear Supercar F2 tyres

Additionally, to reduce cowl and steering wheel shake, engineers added a strut tower brace, a front “X” brace and a reinforced transmission support brace.

Like the coupe, the convertible has a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine with 580 hp (432 kW / 588 PS) and 556 lb-ft (754 Nm) of torque.

To get these impressive figures, the engine has a unique induction system, an improved air intake and a higher-efficiency intercooler. Additionally, the car is equipped with an electric power steering system which consumes less engine power than a conventional hydraulic setup.

The standard transmission is a high-strength, Tremec TR-6060 MG9 manual which boasts a “dual-mass flywheel, twin-disc clutch, and triple synchros for smooth, precise shifts.” If you prefer not to exert yourself, there’s an optional six-speed automatic with three distinct modes: Drive (daily commuting), Sport (aggressing driving) and Manual (no automatic up shifts).

Other highlights include a high-performance fuel system, a rear-differential cooler, Magnetic Ride Control 3.0 (dual-coil magnetorheological dampers) and Performance Traction Management. The latter system offers five modes and adjusts the magnetic ride control, launch control, traction control and electronic stability control for optimum performance.

According to chief engineer Al Oppenheiser, “For sheer power, the ZL1 delivers more horsepower than a Ferrari 458, more torque than an Aston Martin DB9, and a better power-to-weight ratio than a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS.”

Both coupe and convertible variants will be offered, and you can see more of them in our Gallery:

GM’s Press Releases can be read below:

Camaro ZL1 Delivers 580 Horsepower and Exclusive Technologies

DETROIT – The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1′s supercharged 6.2L engine is SAE-rated at 580 horsepower (432 kW) and 556 lb.-ft. of torque (754 Nm) – making it the most-powerful production Camaro ever.

The ZL1′s outstanding power is complemented by advanced powertrain and chassis technologies, including exclusive Performance Traction Management and third-generation Magnetic Ride Control.

“The Camaro ZL1 delivers supercar performance and technology in the sports-car segment,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “For sheer power, the ZL1 delivers more horsepower than a Ferrari 458, more torque than an Aston Martin DB9 V12, and a better power-to-weight ratio than a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS.

“The Camaro ZL1 also features exclusive chassis and traction technologies,” Oppenheiser said, “to offer the best of all worlds – including balanced handling for the track, acceleration for a drag strip, and the comfort of a daily driver.”

The most-powerful production Camaro ever

The 2012 Camaro ZL1′s surpasses the advertised power of the legendary 1969 Camaro ZL1′s 427 cubic-inch big block by more than 150 horsepower (112 kW) – while meeting modern emissions requirements. And, the new ZL1 is backed by General Motors’ five-year / 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

“The torque is going to make the ZL1 a car you won’t want to get out of,” said John Rydzewski, assistant chief engineer for small block engines. “Not only will the ZL1 have more power and torque than the competition, we’re making it available with an optional automatic transmission, to appeal to a wider group of sports car enthusiasts.”

The all-aluminum LSA supercharged V-8 is part of GM’s legendary small-block engine family. For a solid foundation, the engine’s lower end uses six-bolt main bearing caps that clamp and lock in the forged steel crankshaft to the deep-skirt block. Its 1.9L Roots-style blower uses an efficient four-lob rotor set and compact intercooler to deliver boosted air into the high-flow cylinder heads.

For the Camaro ZL1, the LSA features a unique induction system, with a lower-restriction air filter, dual inlet paths, and improved airflow through the supercharger housing. Other changes include a higher-efficiency supercharger intercooler and electric power steering system, which consumes less engine power than hydraulic-steering systems.

The ZL1 will be offered with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The Tremec TR-6060 “MG9″ manual features 30 percent more torque capacity than in the Camaro SS. The higher torque capacity results from a strengthened output shaft, high-strength rear housing, and additional roller bearing. The MG9 has also been tuned for improved shift feel, with a dual-mass flywheel, twin-disc clutch, and triple synchros for smooth, precise shifts.

Similarly, the Hydra-Matic 6L90 automatic has been strengthened to handle the torque and horsepower produced by the 6.2L supercharged small block. The 6L90 features a strengthened input gearset with two additional pinion gears, additional clutch plate, and a strengthened output shaft and gearset. To make the ZL1 perform equally well on street and track, the 6L90 features three distinct drive modes:

Drive: The shift pattern is calibrated for optimal fuel economy, including second-gear starts, while the shift feel is tuned for a smooth driving experience. Engaging the tap-shift feature on the steering wheel or shift lever engages temporary manual mode.

Sport: The shift pattern is calibrated for more aggressing driving, including first-gear starts for maximum performance. The shift feel is also more aggressive, with a performance algorithm that holds the transmission in lower gears during aggressive driving.

Manual: Here, the 6L90 offers the driver true manual control, with no automatic up shifts, and staged upshifts for incredibly fast shifts and maximum performance.

Other track-ready features of the ZL1 include:

An engine-oil cooler, identical to the system on the Corvette ZR1. The integral liquid-to-liquid system is so effective that both the manual and automatic transmissions are deemed to be fully track-capable with the standard factory-installed cooling package.

A rear-differential cooler, which pumps transmission fluid to a heat exchanger, reduces temperatures in the differential by more than 100 F.

A high-performance fuel system delivers fuel to the LSA engine under any performance driving condition. For example, the system features additional fuel pickups on the primary side, and the secondary fuel pickup is moved outboard for continuous fuel access during high-g cornering under low fuel conditions.

Magnetic Ride Control 3.0 adjusts damping 1,000 times per second

The Camaro ZL1 will feature the third-generation of Magnetic Ride Control (MRC).

MRC employs valve-less damping and Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid technology. MR fluid is a suspension of iron particles in a synthetic fluid. When the system is activated, the particles are magnetized and aligned into fibrous structures, changing flow resistance. By controlling the current to an electromagnetic coil inside the piston of the damper, the system varies the suspension firmness to match the road and driving conditions.

“Traditional suspension systems at some point compromise ride quality for road-holding grip and body control,” said Oppenheiser. “With Magnetic Ride Control, we can offer customers the best of both worlds: A comfortable ride that makes the ZL1 appropriate as a daily driver and the incredibly precise body control that makes the ZL1 so enjoyable on the track.”

For the third-generation, MRC uses new twin-wire/dual-coil dampers at all four corners. The smaller dual-coil system – with one coil at either end of the damper – replaces the larger single-core design of the previous generation.

The new design allows even more precise control of the electrical current (and magnetic flux), allowing greater range between the softest setting for ride comfort and the firmest setting for track driving. The new dual-coil design also enables faster response, with damping levels now adjusted up to 1,000 times per second – about one adjustment per inch of vehicle travel at 60 mph – making the system exceptionally responsive to changing driving and road conditions.

There are three settings for MRC in the ZL1: Tour, Sport, and Track.

Exclusive Performance Traction Management for the race course, and the drag strip

The Camaro ZL1 will also offer Performance Traction Management (PTM) as standard equipment, which is exclusive to General Motors. First introduced on the Corvette ZR1, PTM is an advanced system that integrates magnetic ride control, launch control, traction control and electronic stability control, to enhance performance on the racetrack and drag strip.

For example, the launch control feature (manual transmission only) automatically modulates engine torque for the best possible acceleration without excessive wheel spin. When the driver pushes the throttle to the floor, the system holds a predetermined engine speed until the driver releases the clutch. Then, the system modulates engine torque 100 times per second to maximize the available traction. The system is capable of approaching a skilled driver’s best effort and repeats it consistently.

Similarly, on a road course, the driver can apply full throttle when exiting a corner and PTM will automatically manage acceleration dynamics to maximize exit speed based on available traction.

Five PTM performance levels or modes are available to accommodate the given ambient and track conditions, driver experience/vehicle familiarity and driver comfort levels. They include:

Mode 1 – Traction control set for wet conditions, with stability control on and Magnetic Ride Control set on Tour.

Mode 2 – Traction control set for dry conditions, with stability control on and Magnetic Ride Control set on Tour.

Mode 3 – Traction control set on Sport 1, with stability control on and Magnetic Ride Control set on Sport.

Mode 4 – Traction control set on Sport 2, with stability control off and Magnetic Ride Control set on Sport.

Mode 5 – Traction control set on Race, with stability control off and Magnetic Ride Control set on Track. Launch control tuned for VHT-prepped drag strips.

“Like the Magnetic Ride Control, the Performance Traction Management system improves the ZL1 experience as a daily driver and on the track,” said Oppenheiser. “By offering five distinct modes of traction management, the driver can select what’s best for them based on their experience and the driving conditions. As a result, novice drivers will find the ZL1 is very enjoyable to drive, while expert drivers will find PTM supplements their driving skill without interfering with their intentions.”

Camaro ZL1: Most Powerful Chevrolet Convertible Ever
Chevrolet reveals the Camaro ZL1 Convertible with 580 horsepower.

DETROIT – Chevrolet announced today the brand’s most-powerful convertible ever – the 2013 Camaro ZL1 – will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month. When it goes on sale in late 2012, it will deliver more performance and technology than many exotic cars and ultra-luxury convertibles.

“The Camaro ZL1 convertible will be one of the most powerful and most capable, convertibles available at any price,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “This is a car that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you drop the top – or hit the gas.”

Like the coupe, the Camaro ZL1 convertible features a supercharged 6.2L “LSA” engine, SAE-rated at 580 horsepower (432 kW) and 556 lb.-ft. of torque (754 Nm). That’s enough to exceed the output of 2+2 convertibles of many performance icons, including:

- 2012 Aston Martin DB9 Volante – 470 hp / 443 lb.-ft.

- 2012 Mercedes SL63 AMG – 518 hp / 465 lb.-ft.

- 2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S – 530 hp / 516 lb.-ft.

- 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 – 550 hp / 510 lb.-ft.

The Camaro ZL1 convertible’s power is complemented by advanced powertrain and chassis technologies designed to deliver exceptional performance on the road or track. In fact, it’s the same balance of acceleration, handling and ride quality that enabled a Camaro ZL1 coupe recently to lap the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife course in 7:41.27 minutes.

From Day One, the architecture for the fifth-generation Camaro was designed to accommodate a convertible model, which gives the ZL1 convertible coupe-like driving dynamics. Four strategic reinforcements enhance the already-stiff body structure to quell the cowl and steering wheel shake common in convertibles. They include:

- A tower-to-tower brace under the hood

- A transmission support reinforcement brace

- Underbody tunnel brace

- Front “X” brace and stiffer cradle as well as rear underbody “V” braces.

- Additional structural reinforcements in the ZL1 convertible are designed to improve noise and vibration characteristics, while also reducing unwanted ride and body motions. They include a hydrofoamed tube in the A-pillars, an inner reinforcement bracket in the windshield header, a reinforced front hinge pillar and reinforcements inside the rockers.

The suspension of the ZL1 convertible uses the third-generation of Magnetic Ride. New, twin-wire/dual-coil dampers at all four corners enable faster response, with damping levels now adjusted up to 1,000 times per second – about one adjustment per inch of vehicle travel at 60 mph – making the system exceptionally responsive to changing driving and road conditions.

The Camaro ZL1 convertible will also offer Performance Traction Management as standard equipment, which is exclusive to General Motors. First introduced on the Corvette ZR1, it is an advanced system that integrates magnetic ride control, launch control, traction control and electronic stability control, to enhance both launch-acceleration performance and corning. The result is a convertible designed to preserve nearly all the acceleration, road-holding and performance capabilities of the Camaro ZL1 coupe, which goes on sale in early 2012.

The Fisker Karma is finally being delivered to customers and company has celebrating by introducing the Surf concept in Frankfurt.

Described as the “world’s first electric luxury/sports automobile for an active and eco-friendly lifestyle,” the Surf is a five-door shooting brake that previews a production vehicle which will be launched for the 2013 model year. Based on the Karma sports saloon, the Surf adds an estate/shooting brake/touring element to the rear, creating more space for luggage/dogs/shotguns. The style of the design is certainly unique, and doesn’t quite sit with the 22″ wheels and overt wheelarches, but it’s certainly stylish and will find fans world over.

Power comes a 20 kWh lithium-ion battery which motivates two electric motors that develop 408 PS (300 kW / 402 hp) and 1,330 Nm (981 lb-ft) of torque. This enables the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 125 mph (201 km/h). Furthermore, Fisker says the concept can travel approximately 50 miles (80 km) on electricity alone. When the battery is running low, a turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol engine acts as a generator to extend the range an additional 250 miles (402 km).

More can be seen of the Surf in our Gallery:

And for lovers of corporate PR-speak, here is Fisker’s full Press Release:

Frankfurt, Germany - September 13, 2011: Taking center stage at Fisker Automotive’s Frankfurt Show stand is a stunning new version of the Fisker Karma-the Fisker Surf-a new model that delivers on Fisker’s promise of Pure Driving Passion and Uncompromised Responsible Luxury. But that’s not the only news from the environmentally responsible American Car Company:

FISKER SURF

The new Fisker Surf is the world’s first electric luxury/sports automobile for an active and eco-friendly lifestyle. The Fisker Surf builds on the success of the ground-breaking Karma Electric Vehicle with extended range (EVerTM) by adding additional, flexible load-carrying capability, along with a spirited new attitude all its own. Fisker Surf combines performance, luxury, style, utility, and economy with an enduring concern for the sustainable use of resources and respect for our natural environment. As a global company Fisker Automotive will offer the Surf in all its markets around the world for the 2013 model year. The Surf is Fisker’s vision of a crossover between a sports car and a station wagon and shows how Fisker is expanding its Karma platform rapidly with additional models that again create a new market niche.

“The Surf is a first-of-its-kind eco-friendly lifestyle vehicle that offers space, performance and luxury design for people who live an active, environmentally conscious lifestyle and like to drive beautiful cars,” Henrik Fisker, CEO/Executive Design Director, Fisker Automotive.

NEW SUPPLIER

Fisker Automotive recently announced the signing of an agreement with BMW that will cover the supply of engines and other components for future Fisker models. BMW will supply a four-cylinder turbocharged engine for the next generation of Fisker cars, code-named ‘Project Nina’, which are scheduled to go into production in the re-commissioned former GM plant in Wilmington, Delaware at the end of 2012 and be on sale globally in 2013. The first ‘Project Nina’ derivative will be a mid-size premium sedan utilizing Fisker’s EVerTM technology to deliver on Fisker’s corporate vision of Uncompromised Responsible Luxury.

Henrik Fisker, comments; “The BMW engine was an obvious choice for us, as BMW is known for producing the best and most fuel efficient gasoline engines in the world. We are very pleased to have signed this agreement with BMW.”

CEC VEHICLE
