The crazy horsepower race drives on with Mercedes’ new E63 and E63S…
Mercedes has revealed the new AMG E63 ahead of the public reveal at the LA Motor Show in November, taking the fight to the Audi RS6 Performance and hoping to outshine the new M5 before it even arrives.
Visually there are no real surprises with the new E63, we’ve already seen the new E-Class and as with all of their AMG versions there are small but effective tweaks to a very successful formula. There’s an incredibly aggressive front end, with two huge intakes either side of a lower intake, with the familiar AMG single-bar grille and massive badge above it. The bonnet gains two bulges to add to the look, while there are subtly flared wheelarches at the front to accommodate the new wider track. At the rear there’s a subtle lip spoiler and the rear bumper houses a small diffuser and the AMG-standard quad trapezoidal exhaust pipes. Inside there are some sportier seats and lashings of carbon fibre.
Under the bonnet there are some changes too – out goes the older 5.5 litre twin turbo V8 (that itself replaced the incredible 6.2 V8) and in comes a 4.0 litre twin turbo V8 similar to the one used in the C63 but with a lot of bespoke parts like twin-scroll turbos. As with the old model there are two variants on offer – the E63 and E63-S, the former now coming with 563bhp and 552lb/ft of torque, the latter an impressive 603bhp and 626b/ft of torque.
Both E63 models are limited to 155mph, or 186mph with the AMG Driver’s Package, while the )-62mph sprint is managed in 3.5 seconds by the E63, and 0.1 second faster by the E63-S.
The big news for this E63 though, is that both models send all that power (via a 9spd dual clutch ‘box) to all four wheels for the first time. They use AMG’s Performance 4Matic+ four-wheel drive system, which allows the drive to be distributed front/rear up to 90% either way in normal driving. So you have the same rear-biased handling you expect from an AMG model, but with extra grip when things get slippery. However, if you’re a well-off individual that also still wants to be a hooligan, the new E63 also comes with a ‘Drift Mode’ which sends 100% of the drive to the rear wheels.
The Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63-S go on sale later this year and we expect prices to be released soon after the LA Show.
